The Stamp Mill valdezalaska

Part of Valdez's heritage is located 7 miles up beautiful Mineral Creek Canyon. Established as a result of gold fever, the same fever that gave birth to the town of Valdez, the Stamp Mill stands a tribute to the efforts of early miners to strike it rich.

The very end of the trail arrives at the W.L. Smith Stamp Mill. This mill was built in 1913 by gold miners W.L. Smith and Billy Quitsch and was used in conjunction with the Mountain King Mine, which was located about 3,000 feet above sea level on the east side of Mineral Creek.

The W.L. Smith Stamp Mill is located at the end of the Mineral Creek Trail. This mill was built in 1913 and used in conjunction with the Mountain King Mine, which was located about 3,000 feet above sea level on the east side of Mineral Creek. The stamp mill is located at the Arizona Mining & Mineral Museum, 1502 W. Washington, in Phoenix, Arizona. This mill demonstrates all of the attributes of an operable stamp mill. This mill was restored back to operation in late 2003 and has been running until the museum was closed on April 30, 2011.

Old Eureka Mine (Eureka Mine; Amador Consolidated Mine

A new 20 stamp mill was built on the Old Eureka in 1856 and 20 more stamps were added in 1857. Alvinza Hayward acquired control of both the Old Eureka and Badger mines in 1859 and consolidated them under the Old Eureka Mine. The adjoining claim on the south was the Badger claim on which 10 stamps were built in 1854 (Logan, 1934).

The development work consisted of a stamp mill, bunk house and two adits. The mill was built on a forty-five degree slope at an elevation of 4,300 feet. As with many mills of this era gravity was utilized to move the ore down the mill. The primary ores sought here were copper, silver, and gold.
